So many of us love coffee , and that’s not a bad thing. But according to new research, guzzling too much coffee can come at detrimental costs. A study published in Nutritional Neuroscience has found that excessive coffee drinking—as in, six or more cups per day—can impact our brain health, potentially increasing our risk of neurological diseases like dementia. The researchers looked at the coffee habits of 17,702 UK Biobank participants who had MRIs on file. The UK Biobank is a massive biomedical database comprising genetic and health information from half a million people in the UK. From the data, researchers discovered that six or more cups of coffee per day correlated with a 53 percent increased risk of dementia. Given that their participants ranged widely in age, from 37-73, the researchers also measured brain volume as an indicator of diminished brain health. Again, those who habitually drank six or more cups of coffee per day had smaller brains in MRI images taken four to six...

We all have our fitness kryptonite. For some, it’s running or burpees and for others, it’s arm day. If you find upper-body workouts to be a challenge or you aren’t quite sure what to do, try a back and shoulder workout. Newbie or not, you can opt for a 100-percent bodyweight workout, or if you have the experience and are up for the challenge, you can implement resistance with weights or resistance bands . As a general rule, you should aim to do workouts that target all the muscles in your body in order to function optimally. You don’t have to do full-body workouts daily, but when you plan your workout for the week, at some point, you should target all your muscles. And when it comes to the upper body, incorporating workouts that single out your back and shoulders will set you up for success in the long run—after all these are postural muscles that affect how you move throughout the world. Having a strong back supports and stabilizes your spine, improves your posture, and helps to p...

She’s a decorated track and field sprinter—she has four Olympic gold medals—and now that’s she’s retired, she’s a commentator for NBC Sports, an entrepreneur and founder of MommiNation , host of the Nike Ultra Sound podcast , and a mother. On the most recent episode of Well+Good’s “Glowing Live with Latham,” an Instagram Live series hosted by Latham Thomas , founder of Mama Glow , Richards-Ross sat down with Thomas to talk about life post track and field, building community, and the complexities of motherhood. As she embarks on a new journey as a track and field commentator and acts as a mentor to countless athletes, Richards-Ross says she “feels really blessed” to have these opportunities. “I’ve always loved the sport of track and field so much—it has given me so much,” she says. “And you know, unfortunately, for all of us as athletes, it’s a short window. You know you’re only going to be elite for 10, 15 years if you’re lucky,...

The fall from the treadmill cupholder to the gym floor is a long one, and it can result in a fatal injury to your phone screen. The slip from the edge of the lounge chair into the pool may result in ever-dreaded water damage. Hiking kicks dust into your charging port and speakers. Cycling launches your phone out of your pants’ pockets and onto the concrete. Rock climbing poses the risk of a drop from even higher heights. It seems every activity we want to do this summer comes at some risk to our most prized possessions. And no matter how durable or water-resistant Apple, Samsung and Google claim their products are, sometimes it’s better to err on the side of caution. That’s why we’ve rounded up our favorite sturdy, waterproof phone cases that you can take to the gym, the trails, or the beach this summer without worrying about unexpected damage. 12 of the Best Non-Clumping Mascaras To Leave Your Lashes Fluttery and Fabulous

As a beauty editor, testing mascara is quite literally my job. Over the years, I’ve sampled hundreds of different products and now have what I lovingly refer to as my “mascara wardrobe”—mostly because it’s been impossible to choose a single favorite. The collection includes formulas that make my lashes look natural but longer, “date night” products that help me fake the appearance of falsies, and waterproof picks that become routine staples the minute temperatures climb above 75 degrees. The mascaras are each wonderful and unique in their own way, but the one thing they have in common is that they never, ever clump. When it comes to finding the best non-clumping mascara, the most important thing to look for is the brush. “Clumping can be caused by the brush part of the wand. If it collects too much product in certain spots, it will clump,” says Jamie Dorman , a celebrity makeup artist who recommends looking for a wand that disperses product evenly. “I like more of a plastic wand ver...

Hear Me Out: Just Lying in the Grass Can Be Seriously Therapeutic (and a Real Life Psychologist Agrees)

When I was living in New York City (aka the concrete jungle), any time I’d come home to visit my family in rural Virginia, one of the first things I’d do is kick off my shoes and flop down on the grass in our front yard. Look, I love NYC—and I don’t consider myself a hardcore outdoorsy person (a camping vacation sounds like an oxymoron to me), so my slightly-out-of-character moments of nature appreciation have been met with a raised eyebrow from my family and friends. “What on earth are you doing down there?” they’d ask. “Aren’t you worried about bugs?” “Nope,” I’d reply, eyes closed, with a blissful smile on my face as the act of reclining on a bed of lush, green grass (rather than a subway seat) filled me with inexplicable joy. But actually, it’s not that inexplicable—because licensed clinical psychologist Aimee Daramus, Psy.D says there’s a lot of science behind this emotional phenomenon. I asked Dr. Daramus to explain the practice called grounding and to share how it can leg...
